The earliest known worked jade in Costa Rica (in the form of an axe god) was discovered at the site of La Regla on the Gulf of Nicoya.
This Pre-Columbian artifact is from the Nicoya Region of Costa Rica, ca. 300 AD. It is a beautiful figure of an abstract form that is hand-carved from omphacite jade. The figure is in a squatting pose with both legs bent and held against the chest with its hands. Made with biconical drilling techniques and visible string saw spine.
The figure is 1.75" W x 3" H. In Costa Rica, all artifacts made from green stone have traditionally been classified as jade.
